Imagine a band that exudes musical creativity and power by using visual and audio elements to convey a grand story. Imagine a stage strung with a warm glow of white lights, littered with flowers of all kinds. Picture if you will, this band with a lead singer covered with branches as he takes the stage. The band is The Shackeltons. They have amazed and inspired their audiences with their story of lost love and new hope.

The Shackeltons came to Tropical Heatwave after our SXSW talent scouts returned with tales of an amazing live band. At Heatwave they bombarded the audience with post-hardcore guitars, soul-splitting heartache, dynamics and theater, a full out, manic rock’n'roll spectacle.

Behold some of the reviews:

Rolling Stone
"...instead of pretending there are a hundred thousand good new releases, ...check out this wild-eyed fusion of Pixies and early White Stripes. The good news: the whole record is this freakish, this thrilling." (J. Edward Keyes)

SPIN Magazine
"Shake up a pinch of the Pixies and a dose of Black Rebel Motorcycle club with stormy instrumentation, the Shackeltons arrives unrestrained. Such raw sonic analysis [along] With Redding's angsty outlook and the band's steady backbeats, [this] nervy post-punk-induced self-titled debut LP will drop Jan. 29 via the Loveless label." (Miriam Lamey)

Sentimentalist Magazine
"Both the Shackeltons and their disc are worth hunting down…explosive urgency that thrives on neat, loud-soft-loud bursts of poetry and gritty chaos…The drama almost cannot be contained. Get this!"

KEXP, Seattle
“...an incredible performance that restored my faith in the danger and redeeming quality of rock and roll. Possessed and poetic, and fully committed, at times I thought they should be committed.” (Kevin Cole)

Sound on the Sound, on the live performance at Neumo’s, Seattle
"a full out rock’n'roll spectacle…one of the most manic and inspired performances…an infectious fury, with biting guitar, driving bass, taut drumming, and vicious hooks, gasps, shrieks, and impassioned cries, brooding and menacing, punchy, laser focused, on the verge of implosion and insanity…the performance of the year…leaving the crowd shrieking and breathless."

Crackers United, NYC
"Their live show is a rollercoaster of urgency that quells into calmer, quieter moments… fiery assaults of the dual guitars… combining the dynamics and intensity of Slintâ€--, the angular guitar riffs of Fugazi and Jawbox, rounded out with echoing guitars reminiscent of The Chameleons and Interpol"

Buzzgrinder, NYC
"A front-man throwing flowers around and saying hello to photographers, and the band providing a romping backdrop, well, this band caught some attention.”

Loveless Records
"their epic song writing tells a story of loves lost and found again. The Shackeltons are known for their energetic live shows and their story telling songs [with] tales of great fires, travels, unrequited love and the emergency of life…to rebuild hope, compassion and optimism to a world of unsuspecting listeners."

Two of Florida’s best bands open the show.

THOMAS WYNN AND THE BELIEVERS, from Orlando, is one of the most exciting new bands in Florida. Here is what WMNF programmer and local music booster Bev Capshaw wrote after she saw them a few months ago:
“Randy, you have to book them….I was astounded, as was nearly everyone in the Crowbar. Folks stood with their jaws dropped. Several of my friends just shook their heads and said "damn". Their My Space link has strong tracks, but absolutely pales in comparison to their live sound. Thomas' voice is the key, he's a mix of Ronnie Van Zandt & Otis Redding -southern soul, blues & backed by a tight band that plays blistering rock. I can't remember the last time I was this impressed by a band I knew nothing about ahead of time. But don't pigeon hole them as an alt-country band, there was as much soul & blues in their sound as twang. Ultra professional, no stammering or lags between songs.”

LIFE OF PI combines the high-energy song delivery of punk and hard rock with melody-centered pop sensibilities; tight, very original, and yet at the same time, instantly catchy songs. Hook-centered tunes with angles. The new album "Genuine Fake" is due this fall.

*"...Fragile guitar lines float in and out of the minimal verses, building to an oceanic chorus highlighted by creative harmonies." - Scott Harrell, Weekly Planet .
