Dark Horizons Listen again

My history in radio goes way back to 1988 when I used to do voices on a show on WFLA 970 AM Saturday nights at 10 PM on a show called the WFLA Lounge. That's when the radio bug bit me! I was addicted, but talking to people at the station, there was just no real career in radio. Most of the on-air people told me that they were paid slave wages so I decided that I would really rather pick something else for my career goals.

The history of Dark Horizons goes way back to my days at WBUL Radio at USF. In the fall of 1989 I was given a radio show on Sundays at 6 PM. I had 2 hours to play whatever I wanted and of course I chose Gothic/Industrial music most of the time (along with some metal).

On the way to the first show I still didn't have a name for it but there was a large thunderstorm cloud looming over the campus as I approached and I thought, "Look at that Dark Horizon!" That's how the name was born.

I did the show for a couple of years until I graduated and I also worked at the Alternative Record Store (which unfortunately is no more). I met Theresa through the store and the radio station. We became friends and shortly after, Theresa hosted a show overnights on Thursdays from 2 - 5 AM on WMNF. Soon after that Theresa became the Alternative Program Coordinator and worked on the Monday Night Underground Circus from 9 - 11 PM. She acted as a co-host until the regular host left for bigger and better things.

She asked me to join her on the show since I no longer had a show on WBUL (I had graduated and was tired of playing to the 3 people that tuned into a Jones Intercable Channel to hear the show). In the spring of 1991, Theresa and I started doing the Monday Night Underground Circus. We both loved gothic/industrial/synthpop/ethereal music and since most of the other alternative shows were playing just guitar music we decided that we should play more electronic based sounds! While we love punk and the other alternative formats we just felt that the industrial-gothic side of the music was not well represented. For over 7 months we still went by the name of the Monday Night Underground Circus and we played a wide variety of music but mixed in some gothic-industrial to try to introduce listeners to this sound.

Just before January of 1992 Theresa asked me if we should change the name of the show to the Monday Night Underground Circus - The Dark Horizons edition. I thought it would be a good idea since we featured more gothic/industrial music than the other shows, so on January 1992 on the first show of the New Year we became Dark Horizons!

About this same time, several people at the station told us that we were crazy to think that a gothic/industrial show would survive, especially one that played only NEW music within the last 6 months.

Well, we are still here today thanks to all of you, our loyal listeners! Thanks for your support over the years and I hope that we can continue for another 12 years or more! Without you, Dark Horizons Radio would not be here today!
